About this card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is a highly compelling product, especially for its target audience of frequent Southwest Airlines flyers, earning it a 'Good' overall rating that borders on 'Excellent'. Its strengths are numerous and exceptionally strong: an outstanding rewards program (4.8/5.0) offering 4X points on Southwest purchases, 2X on gas and dining, and a generous 60,000-point sign-up bonus (worth approximately $900). The fee structure is also excellent (4.5/5.0); while the annual fee is $229, it is effectively reduced to a very reasonable net cost (around $41.50) by the $75 annual Southwest travel credit and 7,500 anniversary points. The absence of foreign transaction fees further enhances its appeal for travelers. The card also boasts an excellent reputation (4.6/5.0), backed by Chase and consistently praised by financial experts and loyal users for its clear value proposition and extensive suite of integrated travel benefits like upgraded boardings, free checked bags, and pathways to elite status. These benefits make it an exceptional fit for its intended users who can easily leverage these perks. However, the card has one significant drawback: a very poor APR rating (1.3/5.0). With a variable APR ranging from 19.24% to 27.74% and no introductory APR period, this card becomes very expensive if a balance is carried. This high interest rate is a major detractor, significantly increasing the cost of borrowing for any cardholder who might not pay their balance in full. While the ideal user for a travel rewards card typically pays their statement in full, the high APR remains a considerable risk and limits the card's broader appeal and financial utility for a more general consumer base. The overall rating of 3.9 reflects the card's exceptional value and features for its specific niche, balanced against the significant concern of its high APR, which prevents it from achieving a higher 'Excellent' or 'Exceptional' overall rating.
