Great news for Indian travelers! **UPI payments in Qatar** are now live, allowing you to effortlessly pay for your expenses using your Indian bank account, making your trip more convenient and secure.

For Indian travelers planning a trip to Qatar, managing money just got significantly easier. As of September 24, 2025, you can now use India's popular Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to make payments across the country, eliminating the hassle of currency exchange and carrying large amounts of cash. This convenient new option is the result of a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, and the Qatar National Bank (QNB).

How UPI Works in Qatar

Making a payment in Qatar with UPI is as simple as it is at home. Indian travelers can use their preferred UPI-enabled mobile apps to scan QR codes at participating merchant locations. This seamless process is made possible by QNB's integration of UPI with its NETSTARS payment solution, which powers the Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals where you'll be paying.

To kick things off, Qatar Duty Free became the first major commercial entity in the country to accept UPI payments. This means your first stop after landing at the airport can be a completely cashless experience, setting the tone for a convenient trip. This initiative specifically targets Indian visitors, who represent the second-largest group of international tourists to Qatar, making it a significant upgrade for a huge number of travelers.

The Benefits for You and Qatar's Economy

The advantages of using UPI in Qatar are immediate and practical for any tourist.

  • No More Currency Hassles: You can pay directly from your Indian bank account in real time, avoiding the fees and confusion of exchanging rupees for Qatari riyals.
  • Enhanced Security: Paying with your phone is more secure than carrying wads of cash. Transactions are digitally encrypted and authenticated through your UPI PIN.
  • Widespread Convenience: As the system rolls out, you'll be able to use UPI at major tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, and retail stores, making your entire trip smoother.

This move is also a major boost for Qatar’s economy. By offering a familiar and easy payment method, Qatar encourages Indian tourists to spend more freely, which in turn drives sales for local businesses and strengthens the tourism sector.

UPI's Expanding Global Reach

Qatar is now the 8th country to officially welcome UPI, joining a growing list of popular travel destinations. Indian travelers can already use this seamless payment system in countries like the UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Nepal, Mauritius, France, and Bhutan.

This global expansion is a strategic effort to support Indian tourists abroad by providing a consistent and trusted payment experience. It not only makes travel easier but also solidifies India’s position as a leader in digital payment technology on the world stage.

A More Connected Future for Travelers

The introduction of UPI payments in Qatar is more than just a new feature; it’s a significant step toward a more integrated global financial ecosystem. For Indian tourists, it means greater financial freedom and less stress while exploring new destinations. As UPI continues to expand its footprint, you can look forward to a future where your smartphone is the only wallet you'll need, no matter where your travels take you.
